DIY Cedar Garden Bed With Plans

Posted on April 27, 2020

I really enjoy working in the garden and having fresh vegetables to eat during the summer, fall, and even into winter. After running out of room in my first small garden bed where we typically grow tomotoes, onion, carrots and sweet potatoes, I decided to add a new bed to expand our vegetable capacity.

This garden bed is made entirely out of cedar and consists of four 2×2 support posts and 1x4s that make up the sides of the bed. The sides are three boards high giving the bed an actual height of 10.5 inches with the width being four feet and the length coming in at 8ft. The bed is trimmed by 1x4s on the corners and then uses 1x3s as a top plate to give it all a nice visual appeal.

I did a slight 1/16th inch round over on the exposed edges of the 1x4s to give the edges a subtle reveal just to break up the long side and to make it a bit more attractive. I also left the 2x2s long in case I decided to add either some netting or fencing to keep animals out of the bed.

This was a very enjoyable project to work on and didn’t take too much time to build. The cedar gives it resistance to rotting, but that definitely comes at a cost. The entire thing could be easily built out of cheaper pine as well to save some money and depending on the climate where you live, would probably still last a long time.

You can get the plans here.
